In simple terms, a Christian is someone who is a follower of Christianity.

However, due to the large number of denominations and sects of Christianity, this term isn't that commonly used; instead, people use their particular denomination (Catholic, Methodist etc.) for identification purposes. Additionally, debate exists between denominations as to whether other denominations are in fact Christian; the most common example comes from conservative Protestant denominations who deny that Catholics are Christians. Regardless, the common point among Christians is that they follow the teachings of Jesus and often identify with some denomination of Christianity.

There are a number of Christians who profess to be "non-denominational Christians",but this often denotes membership of a distinct stream of the faith that,in denying the significance of denominations,in fact constitutes its followers as a group every bit as distinct, and as divided into separate organizations,as most denominational organizations.
