Paramhansa Yogananda
From SourceryForge
Paramhansa Yogananda (born Mukunda Lal Ghosh on January 5,1893,died March 7,1952),whose title has posthumously often been spelled Paramahansa, was a teacher of Yoga who brought Kriya Yoga to the West.He founded the Self-Realization Fellowship.
His best-known work is the Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946.He made a number of revisions before his death, and the SRF has controversially made additional revisions after his death.
His parents were both disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya,as was Yogananda's guru,Sri Yukteswar Giri.Sri Yukteswar initiated Yogananda into the Swami Order and later bestowed on him the title of Paramhansa, which means "supreme swan".The spelling "Paramahansa" was not used by Yogananda in his lifetime but is more correct in classical Sanskrit;the SRF actually photomanipulated Yogananda's signature to insert the extra A.Dissidents claim this was done as part of a campaign to gain the favor of the Jagadguru Sri Shankaracharya (head of the Swami Order) who was unsure of the SRF's bona fides.
