Egyptian God of Wisdom. Tarot is also known as the Book of Thoth. Original spelling DHTY; originally pronounced something similar to Djihuwtiy.
Thoth is generally credited with giving humankind the gift of writing,and his scrolls of secret wisdon were said to be hidden in a series of seven boxes guarded by an immortal serpent. He is also known as the godform presiding over Magick.
The Greeks identified this god with Hermes, the Romans with Mercury, and the Norse with Odin.
According to some myths he was the son of Ra,according to others the son of Set,and still others called him the direct creation of Atum and oldest of all gods.
The center of his worship was in Ashmunein.
