Tyr was once the leader of the norse gods before Odin was. Tyr is justice and duty oriented. He lost his hand so that the Fenris wolf might be bound.
In older myths Tyr is Odin's father (in later myths Odin is the son of Bor).In the history of mythology Tyr is cognate with the ancient Vedic god Dyaus Pater,and with Zeus.The name's proto-Indo-European root is ancestral to the Greek and Latin words for "god".
Tuesday is named for and sacred to this god.
