The United States of America is a nation on the American continent formed by former colonies of Great Britain though it now includes some territories that were never part of the British Empire. It declared its independence on July 4,1776 but was not internationally accepted as an independent nation until the Treaty of Paris in 1783 concluded a revolutionary war that had begun in 1775.
